Strengthening Legislation for Women Affected by Sexual Violence and Exploitation in Lebanon
The project objective is to empower women to participate politically and advance fair legislation for women and girls in Lebanon.
The project will build awareness of barriers to women’s participation; work for structural adjustments;
present draft amendments to Articles 503-521 of the Penal Code, with the goal of providing increased protection to women and girl survivors of gender-based violence and sexual assault; raise nationwide awareness on the draft amendments by engaging communities in a national sensitization campaign.
The project is highly relevant in the context of COVID-19, with a surge in domestic violence amid lockdowns, quarantines and economic and social pressures.
National Survey:
Prior to the Lebanese elections taking place in May 2022, ABAAD conducted a national survey in partnership with the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF). The survey highlights the behavior and attitudes of voters and candidates towards women’s political participation in the upcoming elections, and their positions regarding the reform of Chapter 7 of the Penal Code related to sexual assault crimes.
